Williams and Wise Showered with Honors

Wildcats Earn Pac-10 Honors and Team Honors

By Lance Epstein

TUCSON, Ariz—On Monday, a pair of Arizona Wildcats were recognized by all ten of the Pac-10 coaches as the conference’s best.

As freshman forward Derrick Williams and senior point guard Nic Wise were just two of the ten players to be named first team all-Pac-10 honors. Wise finished the season averaging 14.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 3.4 assist per game.

However, the numbers do not do him justice as he came back for his senior season leading his young but talented Wildcats to a 10-8 Pac-10 record and impressive wins over Arizona State, Washington and Cal.

Williams was the only freshmen to be named to the first team all-Pac-10 as he finished eighth in the conference in scoring with 15.7 points per game and fifth in rebounds at seven per game.

However, Williams was not done receiving accolades as he brought home the Pac-10’s Freshmen of the Year Award. The youthful Williams finished led all freshmen in rebounds per game with seven.

Besides leading all freshmen in rebounds, Williams also led the Wildcats in scoring and rebounds. Williams is the first freshmen since Frank Smith in 1979-1980 to lead an Arizona team in rebounding.

More impressively, as the Wildcats entered the conference schedule, Williams stepped up his game and dominated as teams threw double teams at him. In conference play Williams averaged 16.4 points and 7.4 rebounds.

The fabulous freshmen became the sixth Wildcat to earn the prestigious freshmen of the year honor as he joins Sean Elliot (1986), Mike Bibby (1997), Michael Wright (1999) Salim Stoudamire (2002) and Chase Budinger (2007).

While the Pac-10 handed out their awards on Monday, so did the Wildcats at their annual awards banquet held at the Westin La Paloma Resort and Spa.

At the banquet, both Williams and Wise received the Fred Enke Most Outstanding Player(s) award. Another distinct award that Wise took home was the Mo Udall Captains Award for being Arizona’s team floor general.

Some of the other awards included the best defender Kevin Parrom, the most improved player Lamont Momo Jones, the best teammate Alex Jacobson and the Golden “A” Award (highest GPA for the fall semester) winners Kyle Fogg and Max Wiepking.
